Pharyngitis is a symptom of many common infections.
It is inflammation of the throat, and is typically referred to as
"sore throat." Most cases are caused by a viral infection,
including
influenza, adenovirus,
and Epstein-Barr virus. Typically the throat is red and irritated;
making swallowing difficult. About 15% of all sore throats are
caused by Group A Streptococcus (Group A Strep) and is referred to
as Strep Throat. Infection by Group A Strep can lead to
complications including scarlet fever. Other bacterial causes
include
Mycoplasma pneumoniae and
Chlamydiophila.
